NEW!  Sign Up Now for Leadership GBA Peer Group – Feb. 25

There are unprecedented challenges facing those of us in the financial industry today. The economy is in recession, our banks are struggling with mounting losses, customers are nervous, new regulations are being passed, existing regulations are being amended and there are changes almost daily. GBA wants to help you lead your bank during this time. That’s why we’ve set up our new Leadership GBA Peer Group as a resource to help you keep track of industry moves and share ideas that work in today’s banking environment. If you are the Leadership GBA Representative for your bank, the

Leadership GBA Peer Group is a great learning opportunity for you. As a participant, you’ll meet with peers from around the state to talk about today’s hot issues, exchange best practices and forge professional relationships that can help you and your bank be successful. Come join us for our organizational meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Idle Hour Country Club in Macon. With questions about the Leadership GBA Peer Group Meeting or Leadership GBA in general, please call GBA’s Susie McGehee at 404.420.2010 or Jennifer Stevens at 404.420.2024.

Let AIB Help You with Your Training Needs
A key component to leadership is a commitment to continued learning. If you’re mapping out a learning and training schedule for you and your staff for 2009, AIB and GBA can help organize all your training needs. For more than 100 years, the American Institute of Banking (AIB) has been the industry standard in professional continuing education and training for bankers. For the past 20 years, GBA has been delivering the AIB program in Georgia. These courses are tailored for all levels of employees, from front-line staff to senior executives and help managers map a career path for their employees. AIB courses are offered in a variety of delivery formats to fit every student's needs and schedules. They include traditional classroom instruction, instructor-led online and self-paced/eLearning. Classroom instruction is traditionally 10 weeks in length and can be customized to fit the needs of   bankers in specific areas. Instructor-led online courses are similar to classroom courses but can be taken from the comfort of your home or the convenience of your office. Textbooks are sent prior to the beginning of each class. Self-paced/eLearning courses are skills related and can be completed in one to eight hours. If you would like to learn more about AIB courses, please contact GBA’s Alison Moreau at 404.420.2034. Also, visit GBA’s Career Paths for Bankers web site for a comprehensive guide to the most common banking jobs, their responsibilities and the training available for those positions. Let GBA and AIB help you with your training needs today!

Help our Industry Shine -- Support GBA’s PEP Program

It’s now more important than ever for bankers to be visible in the community demonstrating our commitment to helping people understand and manage their money. So, start the new year by supporting the Personal Economics Program (PEP) and make arrangements to visit your local classrooms and civic organizations. For example, make plans now to participate in Career Day or National Teach Children to Save Day in your local schools. Adult and senior members of your community also need your help with the latest financial

literacy information. These presentations can also be reported as PEP contacts. GBA has PEP materials and brochures available to help you with your presentations. Topics include personal financial management, credit responsibilities, identity theft, the latest FDIC information and much more. If you would like to receive a PEP Kit containing samples of these materials, please contact GBA’s Jennifer Stevens at 404.420.2024. Get involved today!

Online PEP Reporting Error – We Need Your Help!

Due to a computer software error, PEP Report Cards that were submitted online from Sept. 1, 2008, to January 20, 2009, were not received. We’re so sorry about this. We’ve corrected the error now, but we need your help to accurately track the PEP Reports that didn’t get counted. We want to make sure you get credit for your great community outreach. We know this is

added work and apologize for the inconvenience, but if you submitted your PEP contacts online in the past four months, please resubmit them at your earliest convenience. With questions or assistance in submitting or resubmitting your PEP Reports, please contact GBA’s Jennifer Stevens at 404.420.2024.

New Feature Quote of the Quarter
We’re always open to suggestions for better, more interesting content. Here’s one from Leadership GBA Executive Committee member Spence Mullis, President and CEO, Morris Bank, Dublin. He suggested we add a quote of the quarter feature to Leadership Notes. It’s a great suggestion, and the kind of interactivity we’re looking for. Send your favorite quote submissions to Susie McGehee. We’ll publish one, or perhaps several, in next quarter’s issue.   If you need additional motivation, here’s Spence’s submission: “It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations... The quotations, when engraved upon the memory, give you good thoughts. They also make you anxious to read the authors and look for more.”  -- Winston Churchill

Leadership Tips: Five Keys to Exemplary Leadership

Here’s a good, short list of five effective things to focus on as a leader. We found this on the SCORE web site, and thought it was worth sharing. SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business" is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide.

  1. Give employees their freedom. Communicate the goals and let them figure out how to reach those goals. They want control over their working lives.

  2. Create an environment that encourages energy and spirit. That leads to happy customers.

  1. Strive to help employees feel that when they have accomplished the business’s goals, they have also accomplished their own personal goals.

  2. Create a sense of meaningful purpose. Most workers want to feel they are engaged in something “larger than themselves.”

  3. Recognize that leadership means responsibility and stewardship. “Leadership is not rank, privileges, titles, or money,” says management thinker Peter F. Drucker.

Developing Tomorrow's Leaders Today
The bankers active in Leadership GBA are committed to developing the future leaders of the banking industry.  As the makeup of the banking industry continues to change, Leadership GBA focuses not only on recognizing those changes, but also on understanding their implications and translating the information into useful knowledge.  Whether you are a banker seeking to increase your banking knowledge, needing resources to make presentations in your community, or finding your first volunteer opportunity with your industry's trade association, Leadership GBA is the place to be.
