Are You a Leader or Just a Boss?
by George Ambler

Many people confuse leadership with positional power. We tend to believe that a person in a position of authority or someone with a title, has their position or title due to their leadership qualities. However, in many cases there is no correlation between someone's position and their leadership ability. Click here for 10 differences between being a boss and a leader...

Leadership News to Help You Succeed

Welcome to the February 2011 issue of GBA's Leadership Notes. This publication is intended to tell you about Leadership GBA initiatives, bankers involved in making a difference in people's lives, and resources you can use in your bank and community. With suggestions about the publication or inquiries about how you can become more active with Leadership GBA, contact GBA's Susie McGehee at 404.420.2010 or Jennifer Stevens at 404.420.2024.

New Name for GBA's Community Education Efforts

Bankers know the importance of being visible in your community demonstrating your commitment to helping people understand and manage their money. We've made a change to the name of our program that supports your efforts to better capture the broad-based financial education bankers offer. It's now called Leadership GBA's Financial Literacy Program (formerly known as PEP). We encourage bankers to visit your local classrooms and civic organizations and our resources can make that easy for you. For example, make plans now to participate in Career Day or National Teach Children to Save Day in your local schools. See the article below with details about participating in ABA's Teach Children to Save Day. Adult and senior members of your community also need your help with the latest financial literacy information. GBA has materials and brochures available to help you with your presentations. Topics include personal financial management, credit responsibilities, identity theft, the latest FDIC information and much more. And, we need your help to tell the story about how much commitment and effort our industry puts into helping people manage their money. Please take a couple of minutes to report your activities to us as Financial Literacy contacts in your bank. We compile the information and share it with legislators, journalists and others to demonstrate just how much our bankers put into ensuring the financial health of Georgians. If you would like to receive samples of these materials, please contact GBA's Jennifer Stevens at 404.420.2024. Get involved today!

Mark Your Calendar for GBA's Annual Leadership Conference - July 24-27

Leadership GBA will host its 51st Annual Leadership Conference on July 24-27, 2011, at The King and Prince Hotel on St. Simons Island. Why should you come? Take it from Walker Jordan, Vice President at the Bank of Monticello.

"
Leadership GBA gives me the opportunity to interact and build long lasting relationships with other young bankers that will hopefully be my friends within this industry for years to come.  With the current banking environment as it is right now, we need as many avenues to bounce ideas off of our peers as we can find.  Leadership gives me those avenues and an opportunity to ask my fellow bankers what they are hearing and how they are handling certain situations in these tough times. The Leadership Conference is a great educational opportunity for me and my bank because of the strength and knowledge of the speakers that are on the agenda," Jordan said.

The Leadership GBA Executive Committee has planned a great program. Attendees will receive an economic update, hear from a CEO panel on dealing with today's challenges, get up to date information on the legislative front, hear about the latest technology trends in banking, and as always receive excellent leadership training. A conference brochure will be mailed in March. GBA has also reserved a block of rooms at The King and Prince at a reduced rate of s209-s229. Make reservations by calling the hotel directly at 912.638.3631 or 877.543.6077. Be sure to say you are with the GBA. The cut-off date for reservations is June 23, 2011. With questions about the Leadership Conference or Leadership GBA in general, please call GBA's Susie McGehee at 404.420.2010 or Jennifer Stevens at 404.420.2024.

Why You or Your Co-Workers Should Enroll in the Georgia Banking School
The Georgia Banking School is the best investment in your banking career that you can make. Conducted at the University of Georgia May 1-6, the school's curriculum emphasizes all the skills career bankers need. For example, considerable attention is devoted to underwriting and originating loans as well as to the management of loans as a portfolio of assets. A new environment is going to require your bank to maintain and rebuild your customer base as the bank's business mix changes to a renewed effort to connect with small business customers and households. The Georgia Banking School devotes considerable attention to addressing these needs through marketing programs as well as the technology needed to create a "stickier" relationship with your customers. What will the external environment be like for banks? The curriculum examines in detail the state of the economy and the altered state of the banking markets. Plus, we know the regulatory structure will be different going forward. These regulatory issues are also addressed in the curriculum, reviewing compliance topics and the revised regulatory structure. The program culminates in the third year with the best Bank Executive management simulation taught by the best instructor in the country. Plus, by means of a number of interactive workshops and panels, executives from Georgia banks offer their insights into the banking issues of the day. There's simply no better comprehensive program for emerging career bankers. Click here to register. For more information, contact GBA's Marybeth Jones at 404.420.2032.
