Lessons from Leadership GBA:

The propensity to rebound and refocus in the face of a challenge is a good indicator of the ability to be a successful leader. The following ideas go a little beyond what we might typically conclude about the principal of Leadership:

Don't assume you know how to lead because you're in a leadership role. One tip is to not do what has always been done in the past.

You are not suited to lead just because you are technically competent.

You need continuous development to lead well. Encourage other leaders to seek that development too.

It is your responsibility to help develop the next leader at your organization. So, click here to register and download some good resources about leadership succession training from GBA Strategic Partner, TalentQuest...

10th-annual BankPAC Classic an Historic Success

Leadership GBA's 10th-annual Georgia BankPAC Classic was a huge success, with more than 80 bankers, legislators, Bank Counsel Section members, Associate Members and Strategic Partners in attendance. The two-person scramble tournament was held Oct. 26 at The Brickyard at Riverside in Macon. "This was the biggest turnout in the history of the tournament. And we're pleased that the money raised will go directly to state-level candidates for elective office," said Spence Mullis, Leadership GBA President and President and CEO of Morris Bank in Dublin. "We are proud that Leadership GBA continues to play a key role in increasing participation in the BankPAC each year." Tournament winners were Barry Adcock, Northside Bank, Adairsville and Peter Faser, SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, Atlanta. A big thank you to all the sponsors that helped make the tournament a success. Four  Reasons Your Bank Should Have More than One Leadership GBA Representative

GBA encourages every bank to have at least one Leadership GBA Representative. However, there's no limit to the number of representatives a bank can have, and it is a good way to expose mid- and upper-level career bankers to the leadership skills and information they need for success in this business. Here are four reasons why your bank should have one or more Leadership GBA Representatives.

  1. A Powerful Resource: Leadership GBA provides a strong peer network for sharing ideas and problem solving with other emerging leaders across the state.

  1. Exclusive Information: Participants get the same regular updates member CEOs get with the most current information about the economy, legislative issues facing the banking industry and current leadership training through weekly GBA e-Bulletins, this special quarterly Leadership Notes e-publication and other special communications.

  1. Annual Leadership Conference: With content modeled after the GBA Annual Convention, this event is structured to expose emerging leaders to top industry experts in government affairs, regulatory issues, the economy and industry-specific topics.

  1. Financial Literacy Program: Leadership GBA coordinates this program that helps educate consumers in your communities and benefits the industry's public image.

These are just a few examples of how Leadership GBA is a valuable benefit to the bank, emerging leaders and ultimately customers. Here's a link to a Leadership GBA Representative volunteer and approval form. Simply fill it out and return it to GBA's Jennifer Stevens by email at jstevens@gabankers.com or by fax at 404.522.9848. Learn Why This Leadership GBA Rep Recommends Going Back to School this Spring with the GBA, Early Birds save $125

The 2012 Georgia Banking School Committee has a valuable program planned this year packed with important information. It is simply the best opportunity to learn directly from the current leadership of Georgia's banking industry. Take it from Leadership GBA Representative Wade Johnson, Loan Officer at Durden Banking Company, Swainsboro. An emerging leader in our state's industry, Johnson knows the value of attending the three-year Georgia Banking School in Athens.

"One of my best experiences with the GBA thus far has been the Georgia Banking School. It was both challenging and rewarding, and without a doubt made me a better leader. During that three-year period I learned so many different things in the industry. Not only did I develop new skills and understanding, but I made great friends with bankers from all over Georgia. We now keep in contact and share our experience which makes us all better at what we do. Many good memories remain from dining in downtown with my fellow classmates. I strongly recommend this program and encourage all the young professionals to get involved and take advantage."

Another Successful Get Smart About Credit Campaign is Underway

Some folks may know it and some may not, but every financial decision made by our children now will impact their credit scores and those credit scores are going to continue be more important every year as they get older. We regularly hear that additional fees are being charged for any credit applicant with a FICO score below 740 right now. This is not lender specific, these are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac requirements. The Get Smart About Credit Program, sponsored by the ABA Education Foundation, is a national campaign of volunteer bankers helping young people develop responsible credit habits. The curriculum is broken down into four categories--Understanding Credit, Credit Dos and Don'ts, Teens, Credit and Young Adults and the New Card Act. Check out ABA's Get Smart About Credit web page here. Also, check out this helpful article spotlighting 5 Ways to Teach Your Kids to Build Good Credit.
