Give Credit Its Due
Through our Leadership GBA Section (formerly Young Bankers Section), the
GBA applied for and received a grant from the Georgia Bar Foundation.
The Foundation, established by the State Bar of Georgia, utilizes funds
collected through the state's IOLTA (Interest on Lawyer's Trust
Accounts) program.
Monies from the
first grant were used to produce a video on credit that was targeted at
adult audiences, entitled "Give Credit Its Due." The video asked (and
answered) these questions and more:
What is credit?
Through credit,
you are advanced the cost to buy something and you agree to pay it back
within a specific period of time. Credit is a privilege and convenience
available to creditworthy individuals.
How is your
credit monitored?
Credit is
monitored through a credit bureau, an agency which collects information
on the credit behavior of individual consumers. Credit bureaus keep a
record of how you have repaid your debts.
How does credit

audience.
Bankers around
the state have put the video to a variety of good uses - all of which
have help to increase credit literacy in our communities. Following are
some proactive suggestions for using the video:
-
sending a letter
to various groups within your community offering to show the video
and answer questions. These groups could include: churches, schools,
senior citizens, homeless shelters, prisons.
-
showing the
video to civic clubs and business groups and encouraging members of
these clubs to invite bankers to their respective businesses to show
the video to their employees.
-
setting up a VCR
and monitor in the bank lobby and running the video continuously so
customers in the bank can view it.
-
running the
video continuously during mortgage and credit fairs.
-
loaning the
video to customers who are experiencing credit problems or are
interested in learning more about the essentials of
creditworthiness, or loaning it to commercial customers who may want
to show it to their employees.
-
providing your
audience a handout entitled
"10 Steps to Establishing and Maintaining Creditworthiness." is
also a good idea so they can have something to refer to later.
