Q: What was your first job, and was there a lesson you learned there that you still use today?
A: My first job was at a local ice cream shop, Mom’s Homemade Ice Cream, where I learned that people will always surprise you. We sold more ice cream on any given day in the winter than we did in the summer, which was definitely a surprise.
Q: What is the most useful piece of advice you received in the early/formative years of your career?
A: Hard work always pays off – even when you don’t see the results right away.
Q: Tell us about one experience you’ve had that exemplifies being a banker, such as a service story that really helped a customer or a quirky story.
A: Our bank participates in the local school’s Junior Achievement program. I recently volunteered to assist the students with their business enterprise project, which includes 5th graders learning all of the different aspects of owning/running a business. Each student is provided a random identity, including a job and income. The class I was working with were responsible for two companies and although they didn’t win, they all decided that the best part of the exercise was going to the bank to deposit their money – both for their company and their payroll. When they found out that the volunteers all worked at a bank, they all decided that they wanted to work at a bank when they grow up. Of course, the quarter before they all wanted to work in the industry of that volunteer group - LOL!
