Bank operations are central to the business of commercial banking.  Specialists and generalists in the field of commercial banking need broad-based as well as in-depth knowledge.  The purpose of this school is to provide that exposure by:

  • strengthening management skills
  • increasing awareness of the regulatory and compliance issues that affect banking today;
  • exposing participants to current technologies and products in the financial services industry;
  • developing an understanding of the interrelatedness of key operations areas and how they contribute to the bank's profitability; and
  • promoting an understanding of other functional areas of the bank and how bank operations units relate to them.

Curriculum
The two-year Southern Operations and Technology School curriculum is designed to provide an excellent foundation and supply the most current information related to these areas. Topics are integrated into a rigorous schedule of lectures, discussions, joint case studies and outside assignments.

The first year curriculum includes such topics as:

The second year curriculum includes such topics as:

  • Bank Financial Analysis & A/L Management 
  • Communication Skills/Management Styles 
  • Customer Profitability Analysis

  • Electronic Payment Systems
  • Human Resources Issues and the Legal Risks
  • Operational Issues of Bank Securities
  • Communication, Persuasion and Negotiating Skills
  • Productivity Issues and Measurement
  • Managing Technology
  • Preparing Your Bank for IT Exams
  • Vendor Selection

Admission Requirements
For admission, an applicant must:

  • Be employed as an officer or key staff member of a Georgia bank;
  • Have a college degree and two years of banking experience, or a high school diploma and five years banking experience; 
  • Have successfully completed AIB courses in Principles of Banking, Money & Banking and Accounting, or equivalent coursework, or demonstrated knowledge of these disciplines; and
  • Be recommended by the bank's CEO or senior management.

Home Study Assignment
Between the on-campus sessions, school participants must complete a Home Study Assignment. This home study project reinforces concepts learned during the on-campus sessions. The assignment consists of researching and writing a paper defining an organizational problem or actionable project including recommendations for implementation. Satisfactory completion of the project is a prerequisite for admission to the second-year session of the school.

Graduation Requirements
Completion of the program is based upon satisfactory performance in class discussions, examinations, home study problems, and any other assignments. Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded diplomas. Graduation exercises for the graduation class of 2006 will be held at midday on Friday, November 10.

Awards
To encourage and reward exceptional work, awards are presented to outstanding students of the Southern Operations & Technology School.  Honor Graduate Awards are presented to students who complete the best home study work in a timely manner.

Tuition and Refund Policy
Tuition will be announced soon.

Applicants from member banks of other state associations may attend the school at the member rate.

If it becomes necessary for an accepted student to withdraw from the school, the following formula will be used for refunds: beyond six weeks from the start of the school - 100%; six weeks - 75%; three weeks - 50%; one week - 25%; no shows - 0%.
