Back in Black:
GA Banks Profitable for First Time Since '08

Georgia's FDIC-insured banks posted a collective profit of $240 million in the second quarter 2011, marking the first quarterly industry-wide profit since September 2008. Through June, our state's banks and savings institutions posted net income of just more than $1.4 billion they did in the same period last year. Credit quality showed continued improvement with Georgia's noncurrent loans hitting their lowest level since first quarter 2009. Total loan charge-offs were $1 billion lower than at the same time in 2010. See detailed year-to-date stats for GA and read more encouraging news from the FDIC's Quarterly Banking Profile released this week...

Cordray's CFPB Nomination Hearing set for Sept. 6

The process of confirming a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director gets down to serious business Sept. 6 when the Senate Banking Committee will hold a hearing on former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray’s nomination to become director of the agency. President Obama nominated Cordray, who heads the CFPB's enforcement division, July 18. Republican senators have vowed to block the nomination of any CFPB director unless the bureau’s structure and funding are changed.

Savings and Loan Holding Companies (SHLCs) would have a two-year phase-in period to file the same reports with the Federal Reserve that they had been filing with the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS), under a proposal out by the Fed this week. The Dodd-Frank Act transferred supervisory and rulemaking authority for SHLCs from the OTS to the Fed July 21, 2011. The comment deadline on the Fed's proposal is Nov. 1.
