FDIC Quarterly Report Shows Banks Essentially Break-Even in Fourth-Quarter 2009
Fourth-quarter bank net income for the industry was $914 million, compared with a $37.8 billion net loss in 2008. Nationally, for the first time in three years, more than half of insured institutions reported a year-over-year improvement in net income. Based on the FDIC's quarterly report on banking released this week, we took a look at year-end totals for Georgia's banks. For the year, 37 percent of our banks made a profit. Total deposits were up slightly, while total assets and gross loans and leases were down about 10 percent. The bulk of the decline in loan and lease balances came from the construction and development category, which declined by $11 billion, or 33 percent, from year-end 2008 -- not a surprise at all because of the real estate market. There are some positive trends of note, however. More about Georgia's year-end banking performance...

FDIC to Auction Silverton SFG Assets
Deutsche Bank has been engaged by the FDIC to auction certain assets from Silverton Bank's Specialty Finance Group (SFG). Two pools have been created -- one comprising 22 whole loans with an approximate value of $162.4 million, and the other comprising 40 participation loans with an approximate value of $254 million. In a departure from previous sales of participation loans that gave participants first dibs on bidding, the new procedure opens the process up to participants and investors on an individual loan basis for cash sales. The portfolios will also be offered as whole portfolios for cash or a structured sale. More about FDIC auction...

New Info to Help Sort Out New Overdraft Rules
New overdraft rules requiring customer opt-in permission to pay ATM withdrawals and debit-card transactions that would result in account overdrafts take effect July 1. Now's the time to prepare for these rule changes and to begin notifying customers so you will meet the opt-in requirements. As an additional resource, the Federal Reserve this week issued a new online publication that explains the rules to consumers and new account holders. Members that use outside providers such as GBA Strategic Partner Strunk and Associates for their overdraft programs can count on guidance from those companies.
