Legislative Reception Draws Hundreds of Bankers/Legislators

Hundreds of bankers from across Georgia braved rain and snow to attend GBA's annual Legislative Reception Wednesday of this week.  This decades-long tradition honors the Georgia General Assembly and other state dignitaries.  The Georgia Aquarium was a big hit with everyone who attended and we appreciate your support.  "We have a number of issues directly affecting banking we expect will be considered this year, and it was important for so many bankers to attend showing industry support for our agenda," said GBA Chairman, Jim Williams.    "We will be updating you throughout the session and will call on our members to help support our efforts through grassroots contacts," Jim concluded.  See the article below about this week's GBA Board of Directors meeting for a list of the most important issues we expect to be considered.

GBA Board of Directors Takes Positions on Issues of Importance to Industry

The GBA Board of Directors is the policy-making body for the Georgia Bankers Association and is made up of 22 bankers from across Georgia representing a cross-section of our members.  These 22 bankers are elected by the membership as a whole, represent their geographic group or are appointed by the chairman.  This week the Board met concurrently with the Public Affairs Committee and BankPAC Board and took the following positions on issues expected to come before the General Assembly.

  • Support Nationwide Mortgage Lender/Broker Licensing System

  • Support Revision to Mortgage Deed Satisfaction Process

  • Support Amendments to Uniform Securities Act

  • Oppose Removing Official Bank Checks as Mortgage Closing Sufficient Funds Exempt Items

  • Oppose Changes in Foreclosure Laws

  • Oppose Non-germane Fees on Wire Transfers

  • Provide Input and Monitor Sales Tax Proposal

  • Monitor Permissive Credit File Freeze

2008 Legislative Update Inaugural Issue Published

We will publish a Legislative Update each week the Georgia General Assembly is in session.  The publication is designed to report on key issues of importance to the banking industry and let you know of our position on these issues.  In this week's edition, we report:

Banks Gain CRA Credit for Loans or Investment in the Senior Housing
Crime Prevention Foundation

The Georgia Bankers Association is proud to recognize the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation as a Strategic Partner.  The Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Memphis that offers banks a measurable, no-risk, high-yielding avenue for gaining CRA credit.  By making a loan or an investment with a guaranteed return, banks receive credit for Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) requirements.  The foundation uses the funds to set up Senior Crimestoppers programs for nursing homes and senior HUD housing units in the bank’s direct CRA assessment areas. Banks also may reposition or recycle existing bonds in their portfolios to capture the same effect, and in doing so create a new annual CRA credit from bonds in the existing portfolios.

Banks may elect to invest or lend funds to the foundation and will qualify for CRA credits either way.  All dollars invested in or loaned to the foundation are fully collateralized with investment-grade bonds, which are selected with the bank’s input depending on the degree of risk it wants to take.  Banks are guaranteed a return on the coupon value of the bonds minus moderate basis-points spread to cover the cost of the Crimestoppers program.  For more information, please contact Tom Fehrmann at (877) 232-0859 or Josh Latina at (404) 420-2022.

GBA Job Bank

The Georgia Bankers Association offers free job posting resources for our member banks.  These listings can be viewed online or through our bi-weekly publication included in the GBA Bulletin.   Resume postings are also available.  For more information, please contact GBA’s Kenyetta Parks at (404) 420-2035.
