Demarest
Strategy Group to Facilitate GBA Roundtables |
|
GBA
is pleased to announce that Demarest Strategy Group will
facilitate the GBA Roundtables beginning April 1. The
Roundtable program, developed in early 2007 in partnership with
Mike Odom of Great Oaks Advisors, LLC, has been
very successful in offering a forum for members to share ideas
and best practices. Odom has recently accepted the opportunity
to join the senior management team at
The Coastal Bank in Savannah. Elaine Demarest, a
Georgia CPA, will facilitate the President/CEO Roundtables. She
is principal and owner of Demarest Strategy Group in Hilton Head
Island, South Carolina. “Mike has done an outstanding job of
organizing and directing the Roundtable program and we wish him
well in his new endeavor. We are delighted that Elaine and her
firm have agreed to manage the Roundtables and continue this
excellent offering to our membership,” said
Joe Brannen, GBA President. Chrys Henderson will
facilitate the Finance/Operations Roundtables. Chrys, with the
Demarest firm for over 10 years, has a career banking background
in operations, accounting and technology.
The
consulting practice has been devoted to management |
|
advisory
services for banking companies in the Southeast since 1984, with
a clientele ranging in size from de novo start-ups to $3 billion
in assets. The firm focuses on strategic planning, M&A,
branching and expansion decisions, capital planning,
infrastructure development, CFO, technology and operations
support functions, and performance incentive systems. In its
24-year history, the firm has gained a reputation of aiding
community bankers to analyze opportunities logically, to use
solid strategic business judgment, to build and enhance
shareholder value, and to seek practical solutions that work.
The firm is an
Associate Member of and frequent speaker for the GBA, where
Elaine has served on the GBA
Board of Directors and the
Community Bankers Committee. A limited number of slots
are available in the GBA Roundtable groups. Please contact
GBA’s

Comptroller/Fed
Vice Chair Say Industry Fundamentally Sound |
|
Comptroller of the Currency
John C. Dugan told a Senate Committee this week that
while the banking system is fundamentally sound, it is being
tested by large and unprecedented credit market disruptions plus
the slowdown in the economy. The economic slowdown and problems
in the housing market have led to significant increases in
reserves banks carry for such assets as residential construction
and development loans; home equity loans; and credit card loans,
Mr. Dugan said. “…these more traditional credit problems are
familiar territory to bankers and supervisors,” he said. “The
key to addressing them is for bankers to recognize problems
early and manage through them, and that is exactly what our
examiners are working with them to do.” |
|
The
Comptroller also said there is a need to reemphasize some
fundamental banking principles, including sound underwriting,
diversification of funding sources, strong internal controls and
risk management, and timely recognition of losses.
Also appearing before the committee
was
Federal Reserve Board Vice Chairman
Donald Kohn. He told the Committee that “the U.S.
banking system is facing some challenges but remains in sound
overall condition, having entered the period of recent financial
turmoil with solid capital and strong earnings.” |

FDIC
Releases Year-end Numbers |
|
FDIC
has released year-end 2007 data showing commercial banks and
savings institutions reported net income of $105.5 billion in
2007, a decline of $39.8 billion (27.4 percent) from the record
$145.2 billion that the industry earned in 2006. Although this
ended a string of six consecutive years of record earnings for
the industry, income was still above the $100 billion mark for
the sixth year in a row. Higher provisions for loan losses,
primarily due to weakness in residential mortgage and
construction loans and sharply lower trading revenue were
primarily responsible for the drop in full-year earnings. Six
large institutions accounted for more than half of the
year-over-year decline in quarterly net income.
|
|
"It's no
surprise to anyone that the second half of 2007 was a very tough
period for the banking industry," said FDIC Chairman
Sheila Bair. "Weakness in the housing sector and the
credit squeeze in financial markets made it a very challenging
time for many institutions,” Bair said. Here's a chart
comparing Georgia banks with all banks in the U.S.

National
Teach Children to Save Day on April 29 |
|
Today's
citizens aren't saving, plain and simple. As recently as five
years ago, our nation heeded the message that saving for a rainy
day should be a top priority, and at that time Americans were
saving almost four percent of their disposable income.
Unfortunately, that trend has reversed. Simple lessons on
saving can help get children and teens on the right track which
is why the
ABA Education Foundation and
Leadership GBA are again taking steps to put kids
on the path to a positive financial future. On Tuesday, April
29, bankers nationwide will trade in their balance sheets for
blackboards and teach young people their financial ABCs on
National Teach Children to
Say Day.
“Bankers are a natural fit to be involved in financial education
efforts,” said Leadership GBA President Wes Dodd of
Community Bank & Trust in Cornelia. “We have the
knowledge and skills to fill the financial education gap and
prepare our children for a positive financial future.” |
|
Preparation
for your presentation is easy. The ABA Education Foundation has
created two turnkey
resource kits (Grades K-6 and Grades 7-12) that are easy to
use and cost-effective. Lesson plans, age appropriate
activities, a quiz for parents and website suggestions are
included in the kits. Kids will learn the concept of saving,
how to budget, and how to determine needs vs. wants. To order
either kit, simply call the ABA at 1-800-BANKERS or visit their
website. With questions about National Teach Children
to Save Day, please contact GBA’s
Jennifer Stevens at (404) 420-2024 or PEP
Chairman Donna Lott with
Southwest Georgia Bank in Moultrie at (229) 873-3709.
Please join your colleagues in reaching even more students and
make this one of the most successful educational events in GBA
and ABA history. |
