One of GBA’s real strengths is the number of bankers who step forward each year to serve their fellow bankers. In order for us to ensure geographic, size and operating philosophy diversity, we ask every member bank to think seriously about volunteering in a leadership capacity.”

Group Vice Chairs Involved
Congratulations to the following bankers who were elected as Group Secretary during the fall Group Meetings.  These bankers will be serving as a resource to GBA’s Community Bankers Committee throughout the year.  This committee not only sponsors our annual CEO Conference and the CEO Academy, they also oversee GBA’s entire professional development program.  If you or someone in your bank has an idea for an educational program that needs to be offered in your area, please let one of these bankers know.  GBA is committed to a Group-level involvement among our members and we encourage your continuing support through your volunteer leaders.  Call GBA’s June Somers at (404) 420-2012 if you have questions about GBA’s professional development program.

Deriso

“We’ve worked awfully hard over the last several years to get meaningful bankruptcy reform, and we are delighted with this significant step.”
GBA Chairman Walter M. “Sonny” Deriso, Vice Chairman of Synovus Financial Corp.

Bankruptcy Bill Heads for Conference
The U.S. Senate passed S. 625, their version of Bankruptcy Reform, this week thereby sending the bill to conference with the House.  One of the most significant provisions in both versions is a needs-based test in order to qualify for a Chapter 13 filing.  Thanks to our contact bankers who alerted our two Senator’s offices of the importance of this bill.  We were able to stave off two negative amendments – one requiring banks to offer basic banking accounts and another prohibiting arbitration in consumer contracts. Both amendments were withdrawn due to strong industry objection.

Convention Deadline Approaches

Please be reminded that airline reservations to Quebec City should be made by next Friday, February 11th.  (What a wonderful Valentine’s gift…)  We are recommending Option C, the nonstop Delta 727 Charter. Even though it is slightly more expensive, it is the most convenient method of travel. To make your reservation, send in your check with the completed form provided in the convention brochure. We are suggesting that you put that on today’s to-do list.  Call GBA’s June Somers at (404) 420-2012 with any questions.

Expo 2000 Unveiled

The theme of Banking Expo 2000  is P3 – People, Performance and Profitability.  These three ingredients for successful bank management are not separate components.  P - to the third power – means we multiply the overlapping values of people, performance and profitability together. GBA’s trade show is traditionally known for the excellent educational sessions that are provided in addition to a full array of exhibitors. This year’s program is no exception. There are eight sessions focusing on the P3 formula which make the Expo program the best educational deal in town. As always, you save money and get the most from the Expo by making sure that at least four people from the bank attend. Information about fees and how to register are included in the official Expo brochure which is enclosed with this Bulletin. Mark your calendars for March 14-15 so you will not miss a minute of this phenomenal event. For details call Alan Van Tuyl or Susie McGehee.

Leadership Institute 2000 Unveiled
A dream is close to coming true as the GBA Leadership Institute prepares for its historic charter class.  Developed in coordination with the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership at the University of Georgia, the Leadership Development Section of the GBA (formerly known as Young Bankers), introduces this new Institute with its purpose of strengthening individual growth in leadership skills.

To be effective, leaders must have the head (knowledge and skills), heart (commitment), and feet (willingness to act) of leadership.  The Institute will provide the context within which individuals can enhance individual skills to foster organizational goals.

The program is 29 hours in length and is conducted over an 8-month period starting in March and ending in October, 2000.  Candidates for the charter class include this year’s Executive Committee members from Leadership GBA.  Credentials for consideration and nomination are:  1) Must be an officer or key member of a Georgia bank, 2) Must have either a college degree and two years of banking experience or high school diploma with five years of banking experience, and 3) Must have sponsorship of CEO.  Enrollment is limited to 25.  If you have a candidate in your bank that you would like to have considered, please call GBA’s June Somers at (404) 420-2012.

Asset/Liability Conference Soon
GBA’s annual and dynamic Financial Risk Management Conference is designed for Chief Financial Officers and CEOs involved in strategies for controlling margins and risk.  This year’s conference is in a new two-day format that allows for more interaction among your peers, idea exchange and networking value. It happens February 17-18 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel next to the Atlanta Galleria.  “We have a great conference planned and we hope all our member banks will take advantage of what it has to offer,” said Eddie Ariail, President of Habersham Bank in Clarkesville and chair of the Asset/Liability Management Committee which is sponsoring the conference.  Call GBA’s Norma Guild at (404) 420-2031 for registration help or questions.
