Group
Meetings Conclude
Our thanks to the bankers in Group 6 and Group 1 who came to
the last of GBAs 10 Group Meetings
last week in Milledgeville and
Statesboro. Group Chairman, Bill
Easterlin, President of First National Bank & Trust Co., in
Louisville and Kirk Rocker, President, Regions
Bank, Millen, did an excellent job in hosting the meetings.
The bankers who attended each of our meetings heard me say how
much I was looking forward to attending
all 10 of them. I want to express my personal thanks to the warm welcome the
bankers across Georgia gave the GBA staff and me. I was impressed with the number of bankers I met and was
delighted to renew some old friendships, said GBA Chairman, E.J.
Jud Vann, IV, President of Planters
& Citizens Bank in Camilla. Our state and our industry are truly blessed to have the kind of
bankers leading our institutions we have today.
We are more highly motivated, better trained and more enthusiastic
about the future than Ive ever seen in my career.
One of the great things about being involved with GBA and going to
meetings like these is the chance to get to talk with other bankers, both
within and outside our own markets," Jud concluded.

Change on Bankruptcy Reform
Although Senate Majority Leader Trent
Lott (R-MS) tried several procedural tactics to get the
bankruptcy reform legislation attached to other must pass
legislation, the bill has still not moved.
GBAs director of Government Relations, Elizabeth
Way, was in Washington recently working on the issue and
reports, It is so
frustrating to get a bill passed by the House and Senate by the
margins we did earlier this year and then it still may not
ultimately pass. Senator
Lott has tried to overcome White
House opposition and concerns by certain House leaders who
do not want the bill attached to an appropriations bill.
Bankruptcy reform remains our highest priority as Congress
winds down this year, but our prospects are beginning to fade.
Should the bill not pass during the remainder of this
session, the GBA will be ready to resume this issue in January.

Session of the 2000-2001 CEO Academy Scheduled for October 23
Elaine Demarest will be presenting a full day of Strategic
Planning instruction at the CEO Academy on Monday,
October 23 at the City Club in Macon.
All presidents and CEOs are invited; however, we must
restrict the class size to the first 25 registrants.
The full day is $245 and starts at 9:00 am and runs until
4:00 pm. The class is interactive with peer discussion and workshop
experience. Because
education is an ongoing process, the CEO Academy was created to
provide professional development for the community banks top
staff official. Designed
to teach the basics and fundamentals of practical bank management,
all CEOs and presidents are encouraged to attend.
The fundamentals of Strategic Planning have not remained
the same over the years due to changes with technology,
competition and bank organizational and marketing systems.
Future sessions include Marketing/Relationship Management,
Compliance Management, Risk Management, Human Resources
Management, and Investments.
