Congratulations,
Laura Vann
GBAs First Lady Laura Vann was
recognized as Citizen of the Year by the Camilla Chamber
of Commerce for her work assisting the victims of the Valentines
Day tornados that devastated their community last year.
Camilla's population is approximately 5,000 people and over
1,500 people in this small community were affected by the tornados.
There were 205 homes totally destroyed and 110 homes had major
damage. Laura has worked tirelessly to help people rebuild their

Annual Convention
|
Thank you for the
vote of confidence!
The initial results are in of the CEO Survey determining
your satisfaction with GBA, and we appreciate your tremendous favorable
response. We spent the
last
three years getting member input, reviewing our entire range
of services and implementing changes to ensure the association was serving
member needs, said GBA Chairman E.J.
Jud Vann, IV, President of Planters
& Citizens Bank in Camilla. We
wanted our members to give us feedback on the association as it is now
structured as well as to make sure we clearly understood where the
membership wanted our priorities to be in the future.
The survey did just that, Jud concluded.
Following are the compiled results of the survey ranked in order of
importance to those responding:

Electronic Benefit
Transfer Changes
The HONOR Financial Network has supported the
Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program in Georgia for the past several
years by making EBT cash withdrawals a required transaction on their
member banks ATM machines. The
STAR Network recently acquired HONOR and is making changes that
impact banks. Effective March
12, 2001, all transactions will be processed through the QUEST
rules. As such, each HONOR bank that wishes to continue making their
ATM machines available to EBT cardholders must complete a QUEST agreement
and forward the paperwork to STAR. We
encourage our members to continue supporting this program and suggest you
call STAR at (407) 875-2500 with questions about how to make the change or
with general questions, call Linda Porter, the Georgia EBT
Director, at (404) 656-7696 or the contractor, Bill Brennan of Citicorp
Services, Inc. at (404) 572-6550.

Congratulations,
President Bush
George
W. Bush is slated to be inaugurated
tomorrow in Washington. Mr.
Bush is well aware of issues facing the banking industry and is making
every effort to determine where our priorities fit within his overall
agenda. Although bipartisanship
is being touted, we anticipate the slim majority in the House and the power
sharing agreement in the Senate will make it extremely difficult to pass any
controversial legislation. We
are focusing on reforming the FDIC, expanding tax advantages for savings
accounts, eliminating the estate tax, bankruptcy reform, protecting the
privacy of financial records, predatory lending and agricultural and small
business lending programs. The
GBA leadership will be in Washington April 24-26 discussing these issues
with the Georgia delegation, the regulators and key associations.

Plans are well under way for Banking
Expo 2001: Your Portal to Success.
This biennial event will be held March 27-28 at the Cobb
Galleria Centre in Atlanta.
Exhibitors are being registered daily and we plan to offer
many resources, products and services that will benefit all areas
of your bank under one roof.
The Operations/Technology
Committee has also prepared a great educational program
that you wont want to miss.
Our keynote speaker, Representative
Johnny Isakson, will give us an update on important
banking legislation and brief us on other congressional activity.
Several educational sessions have also been planned that
will cover hot topics such as website development, internet and
network security, courtesy overdraft protection and employee
retention. Publicity
brochures, including a registration form, will be mailed in two
weeks. If you have
any questions about the Expo, call GBAs Susie
McGehee at (404) 420-2010, Marybeth
Jones at (404) 420-2032 or Edie
Canales at (404) 420-2034.
This will be your last chance to experience this event
until 2003!
Georgia Banking School
Twenty bankers took advantage of the Early Bird registration and enrolled in the 2001 freshman class of
GBAs Georgia Banking School to be held
April 29-May 4 at the University
of Georgia in Athens. Having broken total enrollment figures for the
past three years, another sellout at 70 is expected. We recommend each bank
make its Georgia Banking School registration decisions as soon as possible
to insure a slot. Call GBAs Marybeth
Jones at (404) 420-2032 with questions.

Academy is designed in a peer-to-peer roundtable format and addresses issues
of importance to CEOs, presidents and executive management. You may attend
