Best
Wishes Steve Bridges
The GBA Board
of Directors adopted a resolution honoring retiring Banking
Commissioner, Steve Bridges at their meeting this week.
Bridges announced his retirement after 30 years of service to the
State of Georgia. “Steve has
been an excellent Commissioner overseeing the state chartered banks in
Georgia. His leadership in
reorganizing the Department has paid big dividends in its efficiency. We will miss Steve’s level-headed approach to complex and
sometimes controversial issues and wish him well in the future,” said GBA
President Joe
Brannen. Steve was
appointed Commissioner by former Governor Zell
Miller and reappointed by Governor Roy
Barnes. He spent his
entire state career with the Department.
Steve will become President of the Community
Bankers Association of Georgia upon his retirement.
David Sorrell Acting Commissioner
Congratulations to David Sorrell who will become Acting
Commissioner of the Georgia
Department of Banking and Finance January 22, 2002.

Realtors’ Campaign Heats Up
The National and Georgia
Associations of Realtors continue to bombard members of Congress with
their anti-consumer, anticompetitive campaign designed to keep banks out
of the real estate brokerage and property management business. “If we don’t match their grassroots campaign letter for
letter, I’m afraid we’ll forever lose the ability to offer this
service,” said GBA Chairman Jimmy
Burnsed, President of Bryan
Bank & Trust in Richmond Hill.
“I know most banks are like my own and we aren’t thinking about
offering this service, but who knows what the future holds?
We ought to at least have this option open in the future,
especially since the Realtors can do everything we do including making
mortgage loans,” he continued. The
Realtors have been successful in their campaign among the Georgia
delegation with six of the 11 House members cosponsoring their bill:
Jack
Kingston (R-1st), Sanford
Bishop (D-2nd), Mac
Collins (R-3rd), Cynthia
McKinney (D-4th), John
Lewis (D-5th) and Johnny
Isakson (R-6th).
The American
Bankers Association has made it easy for bankers to write
letters to both Senators and your own member of Congress.
You do not have to be an ABA member to participate and the process
is easy. Type in your zip
code and your representatives names will appear.
Add your name and address, press send and the three letters are
automatically generated. You
can do the same thing by calling 1-866-464-9273.
The Federal
Reserve and Treasury
Department have
concluded real estate brokerage and property management is a financial
service that should be authorized for banks, and we need to support their
findings. Call GBA’s Elizabeth
Way at (404) 420-2027 with questions.

The sessions allow you to view the presentation over your computer
and with your audio connection, you can not only hear the speaker but ask
questions as well. The speakers are nationally known presenters and are
considered experts in their fields. There
are eight seminars scheduled for 2002.

Twenty-six bankers took advantage of the Early Bird registration and enrolled in the 2002 freshman class in
Athens. Having broken recent total enrollment figures for the past three
years, another sellout at 70 is expected. We recommend each bank make its Georgia Banking School registration decisions soon. Call GBA’s Marybeth

Financial
Risk Management Conference
The Asset/Liability Management Committee
is pleased to present the 2002
Financial Risk Management Conference to be held March
13-14 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta. Nationally
recognized economist Christopher Low of FTN Financials (First
Tennessee Capital Markets) in New York will address the economy in general
as well as the recovery of interest rates.
Strategies for investment portfolio management and management of
the bank’s funding dilemma will also be on the agenda. Our thanks to Rob
Cochran, Committee Chair and Vice President and Treasurer of United
Community Banks, Inc. in Blairsville, and the Committee for
putting together an informative agenda. You may call the Renaissance Waverly Hotel directly at (770)
953-4500 for reservations. The deadline for the reserved block of rooms is
February 19. Contact GBA’s Norma
Guild at (404) 420-2031 for more information.
e-Learning New Pricing Structure
GBA is pleased to announce
that our self-paced Internet courses (e-Learning) have been
drastically reduced when you purchase more than ten seats at a time. These
courses are two to six hours in duration and are delivered via the
Internet in a self-paced format. The
fifty courses offered cover compliance, retail banking fundamentals, sales
skills, trust and investments and small business banking.
To take advantage of the deeply discounted price, you must enroll
between 10 and 24 students. The
prices are based on the number of enrollments per bank so more students
mean even lower prices. You
can take the entire catalog of courses for as little as $136 per student!
You can also take a suite of courses such as The Compliance Suite
or Retail Banking Fundamentals for as little as $54 per student, or you
can choose ten courses from the catalog and pay only $95 per student.
There are many options that are all cost effective.
For more information, call Edie
Canales at (404) 420-2034.
