FASB Delays Effective Date of Debt Securities Rule
The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) agreed yesterday to delay the September 30 effective date of a proposal which could have significant and negative effects on our members.  The proposal, titled the Meaning of Other-Than-Temporary Impairment and Its Application to Certain Instruments (EITF 03-1), for equity securities is being closely followed by GBA’s Asset Liability Management Committee and the Board of Directors.  GBA had written FASB asking for the delay.  GBA is also preparing our comment letter on the actual proposal and will share that with you as soon as possible.

Community Bank Competitiveness Survey
The GBA is cooperating with the American Bankers Association on the annual ABA Community Bankers Council/ABA Banking Journal Community Bank Competitiveness Survey.  It’s critical to get the most responses possible for this widely followed survey. If for some reason the survey hasn't reached your bank, you can download a copy at the following web address: http://www.ababj.com/pdfs/05_CompSurvey.pdf.

Southern Operations/Technology School Deadline Approaches
The 2004 Southern Operations and Technology School takes place November 7-12 on the campus of the University of Georgia.  The deadline for school registration is October 15.   This is the South’s finest school for banking operations and technology education.  It is hosted by the GBA and co-sponsored with six other state bankers associations.  The school’s sessions include the traditional bank operations and compliance areas, as well as an emphasis on risk management, profitability, sales, people-related issues and technology.  For more information and to register, please call Marybeth Jones at (404) 420-2032.

BankPAC Classic Nears
The Leadership GBA Executive Committee has finalized plans for the fourth annual Georgia BankPAC Classic.  This two-person scramble tournament will be held Wednesday, October 20, at The Club at River Forest in Forsyth.  The registration for this event is $300 per two-person team or $150 per person and includes greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch and a reception.  Register now to play on a brand new course where few have played before.  With questions concerning the tournament, please call GBA’s Susie McGehee at (404) 420-2010.
