Group Meetings Begin September 7
GBA’s annual series of Group Meetings will begin in Athens on September 7 and end in Statesboro on September 15.  “These meetings are a great opportunity for bankers across Georgia to meet locally with their colleagues, the GBA leadership, key staff and associate members,” said GBA Chairman Tom Wiley, President and CEO of Flag Bank in Atlanta. Also at this event, key leaders are chosen for the Association for the upcoming year. Even-numbered Groups elect a member to the GBA Board for a two-year term and each Group elects three officers to represent their Group within the GBA. The Group Chair serves on the Nominating Committee to select statewide officers and serves as chairman for the Group’s meeting next year. The Group Vice Chair works with the Public Affairs Committee to identify hot legislative and regulatory issues that should be addressed. The Group Secretary works with the Community Bankers Committee to plan GBA’s educational program.  Our thanks to the following volunteers who will chair your Group this year:

Group 1:  Darron Burnette, Sea Island Bank, Statesboro
Group 2:  Glenn Willis, South Georgia Banking Company, Tifton
Group 3:  Rick Whaley, The Citizens Bank of Americus
Group 4:  Chuck Copeland, First National Bank of Griffin
Group 5:  Chris Burnett, Cornerstone Bank, Atlanta

If you have questions about your Group Meeting, please contact GBA’s Susie McGehee at (404) 420-2010.

Congress in Recess
Congress is in recess the month of August.  We hope our members will not pass upTake Action the opportunity to speak with your member of Congress about our position opposing the credit union’s bill giving them additional commercial lending authority while reducing their capital requirements.  Bankers in some congressional districts are clearly sending more letters than bankers in other districts.  Two members of Congress who need to hear from more bankers are our two members on the House Financial Services Committee Tom Price and David Scott.  If you are a constituent of either of these members, please send your letter today.  It takes only a couple of minutes to fill out a simple online form with your name and mailing address to send a letter.  Our goal is 2,990 letters and to date, 718 have been written.

Judge Jails Mortgage Fraudster
The Georgia Bankers Association has supported legislation better defining mortgage fraud and increasing the penalties for those convicted of the crime.  This week, Atlanta federal district court judge Tom Thrash sentenced the attorney involved in a major fraud to a 30 year federal prison sentence – what many believe to be the harshest sentence handed down in the nation.  Mortgage fraud usually involves a ring of thieves who provide inflated appraisals and other false documents to a crooked attorney who in turn defrauds the lender.  We have seen instances of a home being sold several times in one day for increasingly higher amounts.

Second Quarter Investment Returns
Second quarter of 2005 was a big improvement from first quarter in the overall stock market.  GBA Retirement Services, Inc. is pleased with the comparative long-term investment returns of both investment managers, Atlanta Capital Management and Reliance Trust Company.  Please refer to the enclosed update for detailed returns.  The third-party administrator for the GBA Master Trust, Alliance Benefit Group (ABG), continues to improve services with website upgrades and new attractive, detailed participant statements.  ABG continues to offer payroll services to current members of the Trust at reduced rates which greatly reduces monthly and year-end administration in a bank’s retirement plan.  The most recent Trust member to utilize ABG’s payroll service is:  Flint Community Bank, Albany.  The programs offered through the GBA Master Trust provide flexibility to meet the needs of any bank or associate member who may be looking at adding or changing their qualified retirement plan.  The Directors of GBA Retirement Services are bankers who know the business and help produce the greatest results for their banks, their employees and for the other banks and bankers participating in the Trust.   Please contact Mandy Richards at (404) 420-2025 for information on how GBA Retirement Services can help design a retirement plan for your bank.
