Georgia Bankers Recognized for Grassroots Involvement
The
chairman of the
American Bankers Association, Earl McVicker, Chairman
and CEO of Central Bank and Trust Company of Hutchinson,
Kansas, has recognized members of the Georgia Bankers Association
with a Grassroots Achievement Award. The award was given to thank
the more than 3,000 bankers who wrote letters to members of Congress
in support of our efforts to stop the unbridled expansion of credit
unions. In presenting the award, McVicker said, “Your exemplary effort helped
make it clear to the Members of Congress that bankers care about
this issue.” GBA Chairman Bobby Carmichael, Chairman and CEO
of
Commercial Bank & Trust in LaGrange, shown at right
accepting the award, said, “With over 60,000
bankers in Georgia, we can be a huge grassroots force. If we
are going to be successful in the next Congress, we will need to
redouble our efforts. The credit unions will continue their push
and we expect to have our own bill. It’s in all our interests to
stay involved.”
Third Quarter
Earnings Report Strong
The
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has released the bank
and thrift earnings report for the third quarter of 2006, and the
industry continues to post strong results.
Commercial banks and savings institutions reported net income of
$37.6 billion for the quarter, just slightly below the the record
for industry earnings of $38.0 billion reported in the second
quarter. The third-quarter earnings represented an 8.6 percent
improvement over the same period last year. FDIC says the
profitability is the result of lower expenses for loan losses and
increased net interest income made possible by strong loan growth.
Here are some bullet point highlights from the report:
-
Commercial lending growth remained strong.
Real estate construction and development loans, loans to
commercial and industrial (C&I) borrowers, and loans secured by
nonfarm nonresidential properties were the categories with the
largest quarterly increases.
-
Net interest margins continued to narrow, especially at large
institutions.
The industry’s net interest margin declined to a 17-year low in
the third quarter.
-
Noncurrent rate rises from record low level.
The percentage of noncurrent loans and leases (those that are 90
days or more past due or in nonaccrual status) rose during the
quarter from a 22-year low of 0.70 percent to 0.73 percent.
-
Signs of industry strength abound.
Equity capital posted its second-largest increase ever in the
third quarter. The industry’s core capital (leverage) ratio rose
to an all-time high at the end of September. The number and
assets of institutions on the FDIC's “Problem List” fell to the
lowest level in the 36 years for which data are available – the
ninth consecutive quarter without a failure of an FDIC-insured
institution and the longest such period in the FDIC’s 73-year
history.

campaign this year has been an outstanding success. With 2006
being an election year, the PAC was called upon by candidates seeking
state or federal office, and we were able to respond. Campaign
contributions are integral to the elective process; and with your
help, we have been able to play a significant role this year.
Georgia bankers contributed $62,394 to the Federal PAC and $145,830 to
the State PAC. Thank you for your support." For more information, please
