Leadership GBA NOTE$
January 2002

Happy New Year!

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to make arrangements to visit your local classrooms and support the Personal Economics Program (PEP).  Make plans now to participate in Career Day, National Teach Children to Save Day and other school activities.  The PEP program reaches all students from kindergarten to college by educating them on financial skills and the use of banking services.  We also encourage you to speak to your local civic organizations and senior citizens groups.  Your participation will enhance your bank’s image in your community.

GBA has PEP materials and brochures available to assist you with your presentations.  Topics include personal financial management, credit responsibilities and many others.  If you would like to receive a PEP Kit containing samples of these materials, please call GBA’s Susie McGehee at  (404) 522-1501 or Scott Swafford, PEP Chairman, at (770) 412-4929.  GET INVOLVED TODAY!

PEP Reporting Reminder!
Make sure you and/or your bank are given the credit it’s due! When you return from a presentation at your school or any other group, remember to complete a PEP Report Card and return it, via mail or fax at (404) 522-9848, to GBA’s Susie McGehee.  By reporting your visits and/or presentations, you will help meet the growing financial education needs in the state of Georgia.  As Leadership GBA Representatives, the PEP Program is one of our main objectives.  Help make the 2001-2002 reporting year the best ever!

The following videos are available for loan from the Georgia Bankers Association.  Call Susie McGehee at (404) 420-2010 to reserve a copy for your next presentation.

Careers in Banking - Produced in 1992, this 13 minute video takes an interesting look at the many diverse career opportunities in the banking industry.  The program examines the skills and educational requirements for a variety of banking positions.  This video is ideal for high school and junior college students.

Check It Out - This video is perfect for high school and junior college students who are interested in opening and maintaining their own checking account.  Included with this 16 minute program are companion teacher and banker guides, and camera-ready student exercises for you to photocopy.  The student has the opportunity for hands-on practice in writing checks, recording transactions and balancing checking accounts.  To allow for classroom discussions, the video is formatted into four segments.

Money:  Kids & Cash - This documentary helps children gain a better understanding of money and banking basics.  Two one hour episodes feature a number of short segments.  Suitable for children of diverse backgrounds, real-life stories keep kids interested in learning.  Classroom guide is included.

Money:  Bucks, Banks & Business - Four 23-minute episodes captivate students with lively and informative material about money management, international trade and entrepreneurial ventures.  This video is ideal for bankers who want to attract and hold teenagers’ attention during presentations.
